River transport

- in the 19th century - the largest Czech river port. In the first half of the century - the river was much wider and shallower and the weather conditions made it impossible to  use it for the whole year (freezing of the river, consequent floods).

The river served for the transport of the coal (transshipment point) and later fruit, corn, raw materials . Austrian Northwestern Steamboat Company had a seat in a house in Přístavní street.

1845 - historically biggest flood (level was higher then 10 metres). In 1936 - Masaryk Lock  Gate was finished.

It was the driver´s fault (the driver died during the accident), but the cause is unclear: the tram was probably overcrowded, the driver didn´t have enough experience, the brakes failed?

The Dramatic Theatre in Střekov

Since 1972 – the company played in the premises of the Chemical factory, later in the Theatre, then there was an idea of playing on a ship, but it was not realized.

In 1981 the company moved to Varšavská street in Střekov, then to Hraničář and later the both the places are used.

The company of the Drama Theatre in Ústí  continues on the foundations of the former Kladivadlo (Broumov, Kadaň, Ústí). The first art director was Jaroslav Chundela, who invited directors persecuted by the totalitarian regime (Jan Grossman, Evald Schorm, Kačer). In the 70s actors who left Brno´s theatre “Na Provázku” were active in Ústí (Bartoška, Heřmánek, Zedníček). During Rajmont´s activity as the art director Jan Hrušínský, Leoš Suchařípa, Miluše Šplechtová.and other well-known actors came to the theatre including Josef Topol, Karel Steigerwald or Milan Kundera. At the end of the 70s the theatre was one of the Czech prominent ones.

During Petr Poledňák (art director after several art directors followed) Ivana Chýlková and Karel Roden came to form the part of the Ústí´s Drama Theatre. Poledňák was also an important person in the era of the revolutionary happenings in 1989.

In 2014 deep crises leading to the termination of the Theatre´s activity came. The company refused to work on the basis of grant controls, which were announced by the city council instead of planned subventions, and that was a real stab in the back from the side of the city. The Theatre then ended its activity after 42-year tradition regardless of great protests of the wide public and also experts. After that it started to run as Klub Činoherák, and took over the respectable activity of the Drama Theatre. They bought the copyright for some of the plays rehearsed in former Drama Theatre.

Jiří Antonín Trnka is the director at present, David Šiktanc is active as the art director. Among actors we can mention eg. Jan Achab Heidler, Jan Plouhar, Anna Fišerová or Matúš Bukovčan etc. Among plays performed at present or lately are eg. Alice in Wonderland, Taming of the Shrew, Fight Club, Bison, Heda Gablerová, City (Město)

First mentioned

The city was first mentioned in the Charter (zakládací listina) of the church of St. Stephen in Litoměřice in 1056 or 1057.

In the first half of the 13th century it was given the title of a royal town by Přemysl Ottokar II of Bohemia.

According to a myth, in Stadice near Ústí nad Labem Přemysl Oráč (the Ploughman), the founder or the Přemyslid dynasty (around 650), was asked to marry princess Libuše. We can read about Přemysl Oráč in the Chronicle of Cosmas.

HISTORY

165 years ago, in 1856, a modern and large chemical factory was built on a green field near Ústí nad Labem, in what was known as the Austro-Hungarian Empire: the Austrian Association for Chemical and Metallurgical Production. The company continues to operate in the same place to this day, its name referring to its rich history.

The association has played a key role in the shaping of the Czech chemical industry and has been of great importance in the development of the city of Ústí nad Labem itself.

The second half of the 19th century was marked by great expansion in the glass and textile industry, for which the Association produced the basic raw material - soda. Its efforts to maintain a leading position in its production and sales culminated in the signing of a cooperation with the firm Solvay. This created an international monopoly, which for a long time dominated the market for this raw material. The firm thus significantly strengthened its position and was successful in international markets. During the First World War it was considered the strongest chemical company in the whole of the Austro-Hungarian Empire.

After the establishment of independent Czechoslovakia in 1918, the adjective "Austrian" was removed from the company's name, and since 1920 the company has been called the Association for Chemical and Metallurgical Production.

In the period up to the 1940s The Association was a strong capital company and in certain periods was even the leader of the entire Czechoslovak chemical industry and a share owner in many Czech and foreign companies

During World War II production was under the administration of I. G. Farbenindustrie and a large part of the plant was damaged during the Allied bombing and at the end of the war.

After 1945 the entire strong and powerful concern was nationalised and split into individual plants throughout the Republic. This step irreparably damaged the Association's strong and privileged position on the market. After 1989 the joint-stock company was renewed and privatised. Since then, a modern, dynamic history of our company has been written.

The main production branch, since the beginning of the company's existence, has been inorganic chemistry. This was later joined by the production of organic dyes and the production of synthetic resins ([ˈrezɪn] – pryskyřice) The production of hydroxides, chlorine chemistry and resins still forms the basis of our portfolio.

The first skyscraper

One of the most remarkable interwar office buildings in our territory. At the time of its creation the Expression-influenced building was the tallest building in what was then Czechoslovakia.

Industry

Famous local brands from Ústí nad Labemslz male

You may be surprised to learn how many famous products have their origins in this north Bohemian regional city. The City of Ústí nad Labem grew out of its industrial tradition. It was a leading industrial metropolis of the Austro-Hungary monarchy and it can be proud of this. It can boast a legacy which is worthy of being called the “family silver” without any exaggeration.

A number of famous Czech products, whose names were also known to our great-grandmothers, are associated with Ústí. In order to ensure that nobody is in any doubt as to what "Originally made in Ústí nad Labem" means, a project has been established to present the famous brands which had their genesis in Ústí nad Labem.

Did you know that the City of Ústí nad Labem is the cradle of the famous soap with a stag on it and the birthplace of Viktor Cibich, whose face is on the label for Březňák beer? Or that one of the best-known Czech spirits, Stará myslivecká, comes from here?

The brochure with the local brands can be downloaded here.

Statutory city ?
