Thoughts about design

It is important to remember that design is not just about how things look. Design is about bringing beauty and utility into accord. Design is also a team effort. It wouldn't be easy to do it alone, so I'm glad that every member of the team is involved.

Programming and me

I've been programming since I was a kid, for about 25 years now. I love the programming language Clojure, which is the language in which the whole OrgPad is written. I even made a whole OrgPage about it:

What do I do at OrgPad

At OrgPad, I'm responsible for the technical side of things. I design and sometimes even invent completely new algorithms. Practical algorithms that save people work. E.g., automatic resizing of a cell according to its contents, automatic rearrangement of cells.

What do I do at OrgPad

In OrgPad I handle design and user-friendliness. But because roles are not so clearly defined in a small company, I do everything from programming to design. This gives me the unique opportunity to test my designs myself, which I see as a highly efficient way of working.

husband and wife

Kamila and Pavel met at an underground film night at the university though Kamila already knew Pavel from seeing him around. Pavel discovered that Kamila was impressed by the idea of OrgPad. It is unclear to what extent OrgPad itself was involved in their getting together but it definitely played a huge part.

How I got into OrgPad

For many years I did mathematical research and taught at the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics of Charles University in Prague. I started teaching in the second year of my undergraduate studies, and I taught all the way through till I finished my Ph.D. During my studies I worked with docent Zdeněk Hedrlín, who laid the foundations of the OrgPad idea.

After my studies, I moved to Zurich, where I started to work for Google. After one and a half year, I quit the job to devote myself fully to OrgPad.

How I got into OrgPad

The first time I came across OrgPad was at a lecture, where Pavel arrived towards the end to promote a seminar he was leading. He showed us a diagram where he visualized his understanding of linear algebra. This impressed me because I had been looking for such a tool for years, and also because Pavel's approach to mathematics is based on a deep understanding of the fundamentals of mathematics, not on memorizing or cramming lots of stuff.

Back then we were working with a simple early version made by another student of Professor Zdeněk Hedrlín. This early version was extremely useful for us and showed us that it could be useful for many other people as well. This led us to work together on OrgPad, believing that it could help many more people.

About me

I've always been interested in disciplinary overlaps and interconnecting different information. Therefore, I've also been interested in the ways people learn.

From a very young age I had a very wide range of interests, you could say that I was interested in everything that surrounded me. I longed to see the Big Picture and to have a deep understanding of things.

This influenced the field of study I chose at university. I chose bioinformatics - a field at the crossroads of biology and computer science.
