RMS Lusitania

The interior of the Titanic
- richly decorated
- first-class dining saloon
- 4 elevators
- swimming pool
- even its second and third class was noted for their relative comfort
Mauretania

The rise of the shipping industry
- in the beginning of 20th century, transatlantic voyages started to gain popularity significantly
- 2 main lines White Star and Cunard
- 1907: new modern ships Lusitania and Mauretania
- the interest about them was growing faster than was expected, so 3 more liners started being built
Safety elements
- 16 compartments with doors lockable from the bridge
- considered as safe (but the bulkheads at the top weren't closed)
- 4 of them should've been safe for the rest of the liner even if they had flodded
- → led many to think it was unsinkable
RMS Olympic

The Royal Mail Ship Titanic

facts about Titanic
- brother of the Olympic and the Britannic
- British luxury passenger liner
- largest vessel afloat at the time
- capacity over 52 000 tons of weight, 3327 or 3547 crew + passengers
- 269.1m×28.2m, 53.3m high
HMHS Britannic

The Titanic's first voyage
The maiden voyage

The fateful day
- 15th April 1912
- during the whole voyage, the radio operators had been receiving many iceberg warnings
- in the evening, Titaning reached an area known to have a lot of icebergs while sailing at about 41 km/h
- about 9:40 PM, the Mesaba sent a warning of an ice field, which was never relayed to the Titanic's bridge
- about 10:55 PM, the Californian sent a message of getting to a safe area again
- at approx. 11:40 PM, the iceberg, about 740km south from Newfoundland, had been spotted
- first Officer William Murdoch wanted to do a maneuver to quickly turn away from the iceberg
- the iceberg was too close to succeed, the ship would've probably survived if it had struck into it with the forehead
- at least 5 "watertight" compartments rubbed against the iceberg, resulting into filling them with water quickly
- the crew sent distress signals, the nearest of them reached Carpathia at about 12:20 AM, but still being over 100 km away
- the Olympic and other ships were too far away
- some vessel had been spotted nearby, but it wasn't able to be contacted, the Californian, also nearby, turned off the communication for the night
- in the meantime, lifeboats began to be launched - women and children first
- although Titanic had 20 lifeboats in total, with capacity of only 1178
- the crewmen were worried about them sinking as well so in the end only 705 people were rescued
- about 1 AM, water had approached the base
- as Titanic's bow continued to sink, the stern began to come out of the water and Titanic began to tilt
- further, after 2 AM, the lights went off and the liner broke in halves
- some lifeboats returned to pick up more survivors, though most of them already died from the cold - in the end, over 1500 perished
- the Carpathia arrived at about 3:30 AM to rescue the remaining survivors
- short after, White Star chairman Ismay sent a message to announce about the catastrophe
Aftermath & investigations
- some of the Titanic's crew were honored - Molly Brown, Arthur Henry Rostron and others
- the US investigation began, where more than 80 survivors were interviewed, followed by the British inquiry
- as results, new safety rules had been set next year
- on 1st September 1985, first images of the wreck were caught
- in 1997, the film Titanic was recorded
- in 2012, on the 100th anniversary of sinking, Belfast (Ireland) opened a shipyard as a tourist attraction
