The name

The word “baroque” comes from the Italian word barocco which means “irregular” or “curved”. This Latin word was used by Portuguese jewellers for pearls of irregular shapes (barucca)in the first half of the 19th century, the term “baroque” was used by French Classicists as a name for the period of the 17th and 18th century. They did not think that art which originated in this period was of a high quality. They thought it was really ugly so they used this term.

When and where did it appear?

It appeared mainly in the 17th and 18th century, in Italy but it quickly spread to Western Europe and other parts of Europe as well as colonies.

Jan Blažej Santini (he built many churches in our country- the most famous is his Zelená hora near Žďár nad Sázavou which is in UNESCO.

He designed many churches in Moravia as well as Bohemia. (the church in Křtiny, the monastery in Kladruby, Želiv or Plasy) and many many others.

His buildings are believed to carry some mysterious messages.

Gian Lorenzo Bernini is considered to be one of the most influential sculptors.He influenced the look of Baroque statues because almost all sculptors were influenced by him.
